A week later, on Tuesday, which usually was Women’s Institute night, Mrs Leadbeater arrived. These days she never knocked but barged straight in, and tonight was no exception.

The twins, sitting at the table finishing tea, which never varied – bread, butter and homemade jam and, on rare occasions, cheese – looked up expectantly.

Mrs Leadbeater told Mr Bob, who was sitting in his chair, ‘I’ve had a letter from Brigit. She’s fine and recuperating well. She said her daughter’s spoiling her. She said her main worry is the twins and she wanted me to tell you she’s delighted you’ve given them a home, Bob, and Smoky too. Apparently, Tabitha is allergic to cats and Brigit wonders if Smoky could stay until she returns.’

Mr Bob shrugged. ‘I suppose so, as long as the cat behaves itself.’

Molly relaxed. She hadn’t had one of those scary breathing attacks when she thought she might die since the night she had found the courage to go into Jacob’s room.

‘When does Aunty think she’ll be coming home?’ Jacob said.

‘Nobody knows, Jacob. It takes longer for older people to get over such things as broken hips.’

She turned to Mr Bob. ‘Brigit has sent a list of instructions for Molly’s exercises and stretches with oils. She insists we continue as she was seeing an improvement in Molly. I suggest I call in every night, but mornings are difficult. Bob, can you do some stretches before Molly puts her calliper on of a morning and do them Sunday, as it’s my day off?’

This was unexpected. Molly didn’t know what she thought about this.

Mr Bob, his brow wrinkled, thought for a while. Then, he stood and the newspaper he was reading slid off his lap and landed on Smoky, giving the cat a fright. He moved to the passageway and grumbled, ‘First cats and now exercises, whatever next?’

‘Oh, we’ll think of something, won’t we, twins?’ Mrs Leadbeater grinned.

Like a heavy blanket being removed, the atmosphere lifted. Laughing, Molly looked towards her brother. The darkness, momentarily, left his eyes, and he laughed too.
